With the revelation of Arrow Island, DC's foremost archer has launched a bit for the title of "coolest base in comic books."

Green Arrow #13 – written by Joshua Williamson, with art by Amancay Nahuelpan – is set to reveal that the Arrow Family has been staying on the newly christened Arrow Island. This island is likely the former Starfish Island, which Ollie has rebranded into a home for his family. As the previews show, they have built and fully furnished a house on the island.

Readers will have to wait for the issue to find out what else Arrow Island has in store, but already, just the concept has elevated Green Arrow in the conversation about best hero headquarters.

As far as bases go, having an entire island to oneself is certainly an improvement over a lonely cave. While the Batcave is undeniably cool, Green Arrow finally has a unique base that is just as good, and it's one more closely tied to his own history. Instead of having the Arrowcave, which was always a shameless rip-off of the Batcave, Ollie has something he can truly call his own now: Arrow Island. Formerly known as Starfish Island, the location is an intensely personal place for Ollie. It is where Oliver Queen learned to be Green Arrow.

Without this island, Ollie would've continued on in life being a spoiled brat who didn't care about anyone but himself. Because Ollie was stranded on this island, he had to learn to take care of himself without his wealth, and he got a second chance at life because of it. Making this his family home is a perfect idea, because the Arrowcave was never really something personal to Ollie. The Arrowcave was just a by-product of Green Arrow being a copy of Batman from his original creation.

"Arrow Island" Is A Better Base Than The Batcave For One Major Reason

It Is Off The Map

Arrow Island is also a great idea for a secret base because it's actually secret. While the Batcave is an amazingly cool secret base, it's actually surprisingly easy to find. If someone works out that Batman is Bruce Wayne, it's not unreasonable to assume the Batcave is under Wayne Manor. This has been deduced by both Bane and Lex Luthor, who both figured out Bruce was Batman and found the cave shortly after. Arrow Island solves this problem by being a massive unlisted island; it's nearly impossible to know Ollie would have any attachment to this place.

Knowing that Oliver Queen is Green Arrow doesn't grant anyone any clues towards finding Starfish Island, but knowing that Bruce Wayne is Batman gives someone practically all the information they need to find the Batcave. It's a major difference that puts Arrow Island just slightly above the iconic Batcave, in terms of practicality alone. While it may have taken Oliver Queen decades to do it, it seems that Green Arrow finally has a secret base that matches him as perfectly as Batman's Batcave.
