This easy crock pot teriyaki chicken recipe is no exception. It is simple to make and is a flavorful, delicious dinner that will have your whole family asking for seconds and thirds.

You can do all of the work for this chicken in the morning, and it will be ready for you to enjoy in the evening. It is super simple to make! You mix all of the ingredients for the sauce, put your chicken in the slow cooker, and then pour the mixture over the top. You don’t have anything else to do until you are ready to eat it! You’ll shred the chicken, thicken the sauce, and pour it over the shredded chicken. The slow cooker really allows all of the flavors from the homemade teriyaki sauce and spices to soak into the chicken, making it a very flavorful dinner.

INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED

  • Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast - Brings a lean and tender protein vibe to the dish, soaking up all those tasty seasonings and other flavors.
  • Low Sodium Soy Sauce - When combined with water, soy sauce contributes a savory umami kick to the sauce.
  • Light Brown Sugar and honey - Contributes to thickening the homemade sauce while introducing a layer of sweet flavor.
  • Rice Vinegar - Adds a tangy, acidic balance to the sauce.
  • Sesame Oil - Gives the sauce a light note of toasted sesame flavor.
  • Ginger and Garlic - Throws in that classic spice and a punch of bold garlic flavor, the kind you'd usually find in Asian dishes.
  • Cornstarch & Water - Combine these two together to form a slurry, which aids in thickening the sauce as it gradually cools.

HOW TO REHEAT & STORE

If you have any leftover teriyaki chicken, you can store it in the fridge for up to 3 days. Once it has completely cooled, transfer it into a sealed, air-tight container before placing it into the fridge. When you are ready to reheat it, individual portions can be heated in the microwave for 1.5 minutes or until warm. Larger portions can be heated in the oven. Put the chicken in a pan and cover it with foil so that it won’t dry out. Then bake it at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

You can also freeze this teriyaki chicken. You can divide it into small portions or freeze it all together; just make sure that it is in a sealed, freezer-safe container. It will last for up to 8 weeks. When you are ready to enjoy it, thaw it completely in the fridge, then reheat it as directed above.

FAQ

Can I add vegetables?

Yes, vegetables go amazing with this recipe. I like to use popular stir-fry vegetables like broccoli, carrots, snow peas, asparagus, squash, and bell pepper. But you can add any that you like

Where can I find rice vinegar?

Most grocery stores carry this vinegar. You can typically find it with the oriental foods. That is also where you will probably find sesame oil.

Do I need to line or spray my slow cooker?

es, I recommend either lining or spraying your slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. This will make cleanup much easier and will keep your chicken and sauce from sticking to the sides and the bottom.

How will I know when my sauce is done?

This sauce will be done when it is thickened, almost like a gravy.

Amazing recipe! It’s quick and easy and tastes delicious. The chicken is so tender and the sauce really adds flavor and keeps it moist. Will definitely keep in the rotation! Also, the crab Rangoon recipe that’s attached in the website is really great with it too!

FAQs

Does chicken need to be covered in liquid in crockpot? ›

When cooking meat or poultry, the water or liquid level should cover the ingredients to ensure effective heat transfer throughout the crock. Some manufacturers of slow cookers recommend adding liquid to fill the stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full. Follow the manufacturer's recipes and directions for best results.

Is it better to cook crockpot chicken on high or low? ›

Don't shoot the messenger. But, do not cook boneless, skinless chicken breasts on HIGH unless you like overcooked, dried out, tough meat. Always cook on LOW.

How long does chicken have to be in the crockpot? ›

Cook on low for 6-8 hours until chicken is tender and cooked through. Remove lid and let chicken cool for 10 minutes or so before shredding (so we don't burn ourselves!) Use two forks to shred the chicken right in the crockpot. The chicken will absorb any liquid in the pot as you shred it.

Can you cook chicken in the crockpot on high for 4 hours? ›

Cover your slow cooker and cook chicken breasts on low for 6-7 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. Step 5: check for doneness. Use your meat thermometer to be sure the chicken has reached 165 degrees F.

How do you keep chicken from drying out in a slow cooker? ›

We recommend putting a small amount of liquid (like broth, water or tomatoes) into your slow cooker. It will help prevent burning and its steam cooks the chicken and keeps it moist. Be sure to follow these other slow-cooker tips.

Does chicken need to be fully cooked before slow cooker? ›

Can you put raw chicken in a slow cooker? Yes. Add other ingredients such as onion, garlic and enough liquid to come 1-2cm up the side of the bowl, cover and cook on High for 2-3 hours or Low for 3-6 hours.

Is 8 hours on low the same as 4 hours on high? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

Is 6 hours on low the same as 4 hours on high? ›

One hour on HIGH generally equals two hours on LOW.

Is it okay to put raw chicken in a slow cooker? ›

Absolutely! Cooking vegetables with raw chicken in a crock pot is a great way to have a complete meal in one pot. Add your favorite vegetables like carrots, potatoes, onions, or green beans to the crock pot along with the chicken for a delicious and nutritious meal.

Can I leave chicken in crockpot all day? ›

Cook the whole chicken

Keep the skin on (you can remove after cooking), add lots of herbs, layer the bottom of your crock with potatoes, carrots and onions, let it go unsupervised for 8 hours, and walk into a very nice weeknight version of the Sunday Roasted Chicken.

How do you know when chicken is done in a slow cooker? ›

Check the chicken for doneness with an instant-read thermometer. (If you're using bone-in chicken, don't touch the thermometer to the bone.) The chicken should be 165 degrees F (I remove mine 5 to 10 degrees early, since the temperature will rise as it rests).

Can you leave chicken in a slow cooker all night? ›

As long as the temperature remains above 140 F you can leave your chicken in the cooker all day but try to avoid more than 12 hours…

Is 4 hours on low enough for chicken? ›

Cook the chicken.

Cover and cook until the chicken is tender and registers an internal temperature of 165°F, 4 to 5 hours on the LOW setting, or 2 to 3 hours on the HIGH setting.

Can chicken overcook in the crockpot? ›

Aside from accidentally overcooking the meals, the most common reason we see for tough, rubbery, or overdone chicken is customers using a Crockpot that is far too big. Each of our meals comes with a recommended slow cooker size.

Is 4 hours in slow cooker enough? ›

If a dish usually takes: 15-30 mins, cook it for 1-2 hours on High or 4-6 hours on Low. 30 mins – 1 hour, cook it for 2-3 hours on High or 5-7 hours on Low. 1-2 hours, cook it for 3-4 hours on High or 6-8 hours on Low.

Will meat cook in a slow cooker if not covered in liquid? ›

Do you add water when cooking meat in a slow cooker? If your slow cooker is 3/4 full, no extra liquid is required. However, if you're cooking a smaller amount of food, add 1-2cm of liquid in the bottom of the slow cooker bowl to ensure there's enough liquid for cooking.

Does all food need to be covered in liquid in slow cooker? ›

A slow cooker does not need any liquid added at the beginning of the cooking process, because it will generate steam, which will become liquid in the bowl. For recipes that use liquid, and have not been written specifically for a slow cooker it make sense to reduce the amount of liquid by half.

Does chicken dry out in the crockpot? ›

In addition, chicken breast has less fat and can become dry (chewy or rubbery) if cooked for too long.

Why does chicken get watery in crockpot? ›

This moist environment allows you to leave food to cook for hours without risking it drying out. But because there is no evaporation, the liquid isn't able to reduce and thicken naturally in a slow cooker, often resulting in watery sauces and loose gravies.
