Although exercise and yoga involve bodily movements there are important distinctions between them and understanding these can go a long way to helping you achieve your fitness goals:
Essentially, exercise is a form of activity aimed to build physical strength and endurance while yoga is the practice of techniques which place the physical body in positions designed to cultivate awareness, relaxation, concentration and meditation.
Movement
Yoga's slow dynamic movements with a focus on the holding of poses is anabolic; that is to say it promotes constructive metabolism, building and maintaining muscle mass. In contrast, the more rapid forceful movements associated with exercise are catabolic i.e.
it breaks down overall mass, both fat and muscle.
Impact on the nervous system
Recommended by LinkedIn
Yoga asanas activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest mode) responsible for stimulating digestive secretions, dilating blood vessels and slowing the heart which is why it feels so relaxing. Exercise activates the sympathetic nervous system (the fight and flight mode) responsible for reducing digestive secretions, contracting blood vessels and speeding the heart, so it can be tiring.
Food consumption
The practice of yoga asana reduces the metabolism so you don't require extra food supplements; a positive side effect is that you may alter your diet, eliminating processed and greasy foods to better serve your body. When maintaining an exercise programme, a high amount of strength is required, a consequence of which is an increase in your appetite a side effect of which is that if/when you stop training, you are more likely to gain extra weight!
