What is the rule for rotation in volleyball? ›

In volleyball, you rotate clockwise. If your team wins the point when the other team is serving, then the person in the front right moves to the right back, becoming the new server. If your team is serving and you win a point, you do not rotate, but stay in the same position.

The first number, six, represents the number of hitters on the court and the second number, two, stands for the number of setters. Usually, there will be three front-row hitters and a back-row setter. After three rotations of this, the setter rotates to the front row and becomes a hitter.

What does "5-1" stand for? "5-1" means 5 attackers and 1 setter. It is one of the most commonly used rotation techniques in indoor volleyball, and variations can be freely applied, especially based on the skillsets of the defending players. Liberos can serve in one rotation. This is a tactical decision typically based on serving abilities. If one of your middle blockers is a poor server, it is permissible for the libero to serve in their place. In today's game, the majority of liberos will set when the setter digs the first ball.

Liberos are supposed to be the best passers on the court. Nowhere does it say liberos should be great at serving; since liberos are switched in and out of the back row, you're technically not required to serve.

A 6-2 is similar to a 4-2, but has 6 attackers and 2 setters. This is possible by having the back row setter always set the ball, making the setter only a hitter when he or she is front row.

The role of the libero

Since those rules restrict hitting and setting at the position, the libero — based on size and the area that confines the position, as well — is often the best defensive player on the team and is used as a second defensive specialist.

The term "ace" refers to when a player serves the ball and the opposing team is unable to pass it.

A rotational fault occurs when a player is not relatively aligned with the players in an adjacent position. Players in the same row (4–3–2 or 5–6–1) cannot overlap left to right. Players in the same column (4–5, 3–6, 2–1) cannot overlap front to back. Being aligned evenly is not a fault but beyond that would be.

Each player, with the exception of the libero, will rotate to each location in a clockwise manner before each serve. Front row players stand nearer to the net and are responsible for blocking or hitting, while back row players are positioned in the middle or back of the court and are responsible for digging or defence.

A rotation occurs after every sideout, which is when the receiving team gains the right to serve by winning a rally. So basically, if you are the receiving team, and you win the point, or the serving team commits an unforced error, the players are required to rotate and the serve is switched.

You may only switch positions once the ball has been contacted by the server. If you leave your spot too early, your team will be called out of rotation and the other team will automatically win a point.
