As so many other bloggers have done (and are doing throughout this week) I took a “moment” of silence over the weekend in respect for the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting and the Newtown community. And now it feels so strange, foreign even, to be sitting here, staring at my picture of rice krispies treats, and wondering what I can say…

Wondering how I could ever possibly segue from something to wretched to dessert. How am I supposed to pick right back up where I left off in the wake of an event so tragic?

It’s hard to imagine returning to my life of recipes, photography, and Pinterest when there are so many others who will never return to the lives they had before last Friday. For one reason or another, I felt like this tragedy touched me personally. In reality, it didn’t. I don’t know know anyone who attends the school, and I’ve never met any of the victims or their families. But I do believe there is some amount of grief accompanying this event that we are each entitled to feel. Whether you feel it as the mother of your own young child or simply as a member of the human race, it’s okay to feel sorrow for these people we may not know.

I guess I’m saying this, because it was a difficult realization for me to come to– that it was okay for me to really feel sorrow and grief for a tragedy not borne by me. But, in the end, I decided that having those feelings is what makes human beings so special. We can have compassion for people we’ve never met. We can have a desire to lighten their load, to carry their grief alongside of them. And that’s pretty wonderful, I think. And something that should be encouraged.

On that note, I hope you saw my post about . A group of bloggers started chatting about the shooting on Facebook. We all wanted to do something to help. The ideas started piling on top of each other, heaping really. The realization that we could use our “voices” to actually do something to help the Newtown Community was a tremendous consolation to us, and we have been anxious to get started.

If you’d like to be a part of , consider making a purchase from one of these Etsy shops on Friday, December 21. A portion or all of the proceeds from each of these shops will be donated to Newtown Youth & Family Counseling Services or a United Way fund designated specifically for this event. (Feel free to add a link to your shop to the list of you’d like to participate.)

I will personally be participating on Friday by donating the profits from the first 5 blog design orders I receive on Friday, 12/21. I will post listings specifically labeled “Cookies and & Crafts for Sandy Hook” in my shop, so you can’t miss them!

I’ve never sold 5 designs in one day, so I’ll admit this is sort of a lofty goal for me. But if I can get some help spreading the word, I think there’s a good chance we can do it.

And, frankly, there is no proper way to segue into Rice Krispies Treats. But I will just say that these are tremendously good. I ate gobs and gobs of them, and Krispies Treats aren’t really even favorites of mine. I think the texture sold me on these– I loved biting through the chocolate and caramel up top. Seriously– a top notch dessert!
