Frizzy hair is caused by moisture, mostly, according to Hill. "Frizz is a result of your hair's inability to retain hydration due to raised cuticle," she says. "When the hair cuticle is lifted, moisture from the environment passes through, causing the hair shaft to swell, resulting in frizz. When the cuticle layer is properly sealed, it can retain moisture in the hair shaft longer, making your hair less prone to frizz." While the right products can minimize the effects of environmental factors like humidity and rain, they can't eliminate them altogether. This is also why we're constantly singing from the rooftops that there is nothing wrong with frizz and it's totally natural and normal.

Though all hair types can experience frizz, curly hair is the most naturally frizz-prone. This is due to the natural shape of curly hair follicles, not styling errors. If your texture is on the coarser, curlier side, you'll need to prioritize hair hydration if you want to reduce flyaways and frizz.

Regardless of hair type or texture, "frizz can also be a sign of hair damage to all hair types and textures," according to Hill. "All hair types can experience frizz as a result of over-stripping the hair fiber due to improper hair care, heat styling, and the use of chemicals," she says.

Frizz caused by moisture, such as that from a thunderstorm, humid weather conditions, or a steamy shower is totally normal. While it can be minimized with the right anti-frizz products, it's not fully preventable, and you're fighting an impossible battle trying to tame every last flyaway. In addition to hair products, Hill suggests using a silk pillowcase to help retain moisture and keep your hair cuticle flat.

What can be prevented is the damage that makes your hair more susceptible to frizz. "Heat protectants, bond maintenance, and leave-in conditioners are crucial for maintaining your hair’s integrity," says fa*giani. If you have dry or damaged hair, using a deep conditioner or leave-in treatment that gets to the root of the problem will likely be more effective than a styling product or finishing spray.

Consider your hair type and porosity.

"Product types vary greatly from person to person depending on hair texture and density," says fa*giani. "I usually suggest cream leave-in conditioners and treatments for all of my clients to help keep the hair strong and moisturized." But, generally, you should think about your hair's porosity, which is how easily your hair takes in water. Low-porosity hair struggles to absorb moisture, which is why products tend to sit on top of the hair strand. Meanwhile, high-porosity hair soaks up water like a sponge, so it often requires thicker, denser moisturizing ingredients.

Hill recommends that those with low-porosity hair "look for products with glycerin or pathenol, as these humectants soften the cuticle to allow the bonds to maintain moisture levels to soften the texture." But, if you've got high-porosity hair, look for fatty acids like shea butter. "Cream-based humectants fill and seal the hair fiber to lock in moisture and offer slippage to minimize breakage," Hill adds.

Consider your end style.

The products you'll need to achieve a frizz-free blowout are different from those you'll need for air-dried curls, Pamela Anderson updos, or clean-girl slick buns. If a product's packaging mentions words like heat-activated, it won't be as effective on air-dried styles. Having a variety of anti-frizz product types in your arsenal ensures you're ready for anything.

Start on wash day.

fa*giani says you shouldn't be shy about using products on wet hair because "frizzy wet hair will always become frizzy, dry hair." This is particularly true for curly hair types, as they're the most frizz-prone. Getting your wash day routine on lock is the first and most important step towards fighting frizz.
