Unlike the process used in current nuclear power plants, fusion involves smashing atoms together instead of splitting them apart. Theoretically it can supply carbon-free energy without long-lasting radioactive waste. But generations of scientists have struggled to master it in a controlled reaction, even though it has been the power source of nuclear weapons for decades.Known as inertial confinement, researchers are still trying to achieve ignition using high-powered magnets to contain a fusion reaction within a donut-shaped ring of plasma. And turning either approach into a steadily running power plant presents its own challenges.#climatechangesolutions#fusionenergy#sustainableenergysolutions#energytechnology #energysecurity#carbonfree #carbonreduction

Fission and fusion are two physical processes that produce massive amounts of energy from atoms. They yield millions of times more energy than other power sources through nuclear reactions but differ in 5 key ways.

Nuclear Fusion: What is happening in the sun's core is nuclear fusion, and that is why the sun seems to have virtually limitless free energy. But can we create our own star here on earth?https://lnkd.in/duHCaDw

Oxfordshire-based company, First Light Fusion, has reached a significant breakthrough in the development of a nuclear fusion power plant. The world's first energy-producing nuclear fusion plant is within reach, and it could be the answer to the climate change question. The challenge of nuclear fusion is to heat isotopes to hundreds of millions of degrees C, creating an ionised plasma similar to lightning bolts, and using a magnetic field to control this lightning while it writhes, twists and tries to escape. This is akin to reproducing the reactions that power the sun on earth without the same gravitational pull.Could this be what Newton Faulkner meant when he sang about heading straight towards the sun 🤔?Read more about First Light Fusion's major milestone in this article. #nuclearfusion #sustainability #cleanenergy #climatechange
