A lost, injured, or otherwise missing child is defined as a child who has disappeared under unknown circ*mstances or a child who is too young to appropriately be considered an endangered runaway. This ranges from a child wandering off and becoming lost, to a child who may have been abducted, but no one saw it happen.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation whose mission is to help find missing children, reduce child sexual exploitation, and prevent child victimization.

Family Abduction

Family kidnappings make up half of all reported abductions in the United States. Family abduction is typically committed by parents and it involves a significantly higher proportion of female perpetrators when compared to other kidnapping offenses.

Not knowing where your child is or if he or she is okay is the hardest thing in the world to handle. When a child is reported missing, emotions become raw, which can hinder the ability of parents to make rational decisions.

The Lost Child as an Adult

Adult lost children feel left out, angry, isolated, sad, confused, and powerless because they did not learn in their childhoods how to get along in the world. They might go from relationship to relationship searching for the family she did not have or form no relationships at all.

In 2023, NCMEC assisted with 22,442 cases of children missing from care. 89% of these cases were resolved. There are many reasons why children run away. Running behavior is often connected to a trauma response or an unmet need in a child's life.

Oklahoma has the highest percentage of missing people in the NamUS figures, at 16 missing per 100,000 residents, followed by Arizona at 14.2. Louisiana has 12 missing people per 100,000, Arkansas has 11.6, and Florida 7.7. Massachusetts had the lowest at 2.7 per 100,000.

Where do most child abductions occur? ›

49% of child abductions are committed by a relative or family friend. 27% of child abductions are committed by an acquaintance of the child and/or family. 24% of child abductions are committed by strangers. Most abductions occur at home or within a quarter mile of the home.

A nonfamily abduction occurs when a child is taken by someone known, but not related, to the child, such as a neighbor or an online acquaintance, or by someone unknown to the child. Nonfamily abductions are the rarest type of case and make up only 1% of the missing children cases reported to NCMEC.

The Lost Child is the story of a small child who gets lost in a fair. He had gone with his parents to the fair but loses them when he gets engrossed in looking at a roundabout swing. The story highlights the bond of love and affection that the child shares with his parents.

Missing someone hurts. The ache of yearning for another person can cause you to experience sadness, emptiness, despair, or a deep sense of absence, it sucks. Most people understand that these feelings are normal following the loss of a loved one or when a close friend moves away.

A “Missing Person” is one who, for whatever reason is not found to be in their usual abode and whose family or acquaintances are unaware of their whereabouts. “Missing Children “are those who for whatever reason are not in their usual abode and whose parents or caretakers are unaware of the whereabouts.

The lost child is an obedient and disciplined child who follows rules and instructions. He is a sensitive child who feels anxious and scared when he realizes that he has lost his parents. Emotions: The lost child experiences a range of emotions throughout the story.
