Maine Coon Kittens FOR SALE In Florida (2024)

If you are searching for Maine Coon kittens for sale in Florida, you might become overwhelmed with all of the breeders and catteries claiming their Maine Coons are the best.

Unfortunately, because Maine Coons are so expensive, many people breed these cats as a money-making scheme, and do not prioritize the cats health or pedigree.

If you want to bring home a Maine Coon kitten, it is best to either adopt one or purchase one from a breeder that has been registered with a governing cat body, such as CFA or TICA. It takes time and patience to find a Maine Coon at a shelter, but it is a much cheaper option than purchasing one from a breeder.

Many people are attracted to the seemingly lucrative “business” of cat breeding, but truly responsible breeders work out of a desire to generate healthy, loving cats, rather than profit.

Of course, many dishonest breeders will try their best to pass as reputable and responsible.

Read on to find out how to locate responsible, registered Maine Coon breeders in Florida!

Maine Coon Kittens For Sale In Florida

The Maine Coon is a majestic long-haired breed famous for its incredibly large size and distinctive ruff or mane around its neck.

They come in a dazzling array of colors and patterns, but their gorgeous appearance is not the only reason these cats are so popular.

Maine Coons are also renowned for their social and loving personalities, as well as their doglike intelligence.

Unfortunately, because these cats are so popular, they are also quite expensive.

If you are looking for Maine Coon kittens for sale near me, you will soon find it is no easy task.

While there are plenty of people all over the internet claiming to sell purebred Maine Coons, there are also many scams and dishonest breeders out there.

One of the best ways to get Maine Coons is through adoption, but if you are looking for purebred Maine Coon kittens for sale, then a registered breeder is the surest way to get a healthy purebred cat.

Still, adoption and registered breeders are not the only ways you can find Maine Coons.

Here is a list of all the ways you can find a Maine Coon of your very own:

1. Registered Breeders

Registered breeders are the surest way to find a purebred Maine Coon. It is also the best way to find a specific kind of coloration or pattern.

For example, if you are searching for silver Maine Coon kittens for sale near me, you will have a much more difficult time finding the cat of your dreams at a shelter or rescue center.

Breeders, however, often specialize in certain colors or patterns.

Breeders that have been registered with a governing cat body, such as TICA or ACFA, have been vetted to ensure their cats are truly purebred.

Registered breeders are also required to provide adequate levels of the following aspects, to ensure they are breeding healthy cats and kittens:

  • Housing
  • Food
  • Medical Services
  • Other Necessities

However, purchasing a Maine Coon through a breeder is also the most expensive option.

2. Maine Coon Rescue Centers

Maine Coon rescue centers are programs that only accept Maine Coons in need of a home.

These rescue centers are few and far between, though, and when cats become available, they are often adopted quite quickly.

Still, rescue centers are a much cheaper way of owning a Maine Coon, rather than purchasing a Maine Coon from a registered breeder.

Rescue centers are also a great way to provide a home to a cat in need!

3. Local Shelters

Believe it or not, you can even find Maine Coons at local animal shelters. However, this route can take a lot of time and patience.

Since Maine Coons are so popular, if one happens to end up at a shelter, they are usually among the first to be adopted.

Shelters are significantly cheaper than purchasing from a breeder, but it will probably take a lot of time and patience to find a Maine Coon.

4. Online Groups

Sometimes, people end up with an accidental litter of kittens and need to find a home for them, which they usually sell at a lower price than registered breeders.

Facebook, Craigslist, and other sites are a popular option for finding cats.

Be careful, though, as some dishonest breeders will pretend they are simply rehoming their kittens when they are breeding Maine Coons in poor conditions.

5. Pet Shops

Nowadays, it is more difficult to find cats and dogs for sale at pet shops, due to increased regulation.

If you do happen to find a pet shop selling Maine Coons, they have likely been sourced from a backyard breeder.

However, some pet shops partner with adoption centers to help find loving homes for cats in need.

Just like searching for Maine Coons at a local shelter, it can take a long time before you find a purebred Maine Coon in this situation.

6. Backyard Breeders

Backyard breeders have not been registered with a governing cat body, and as such, there is no way to guarantee they are providing adequate resources to all of their cats.

Backyard breeders are more commonly motivated by profit rather than a desire to produce healthy, loving cats.

They may look tempting at first, since they are selling Maine Coons for far lower rates than the registered breeders, however, their low cost comes with a hidden price.

Properly raising Maine Coons is very expensive, so registered breeders have to charge steep prices.

A cheap Maine Coon from a breeder means they have cut corners, and probably are not providing proper medical care or housing.

Furthermore, many backyard breeders try to sell mixed Maine Coons or even cats that are not Maine Coons at all, claiming they are purebred without any proof or documentation.

Registered Maine Coon Breeders In Florida

Searching for Maine Coon cat breeders in Florida can be tiring and overwhelming if you are simply relying on a search engine.

If you are determined to bring home a purebred Maine Coon, then the most reliable way to do so is through a breeder that has been registered with a governing cat body.

Governing cat bodies are organizations dedicated to:

  • Establishing Breed Standards
  • Preserving Pedigree Bloodlines
  • Producing High-Quality Cats

These organizations have a thorough vetting process to ensure that all of their registered breeders provide proper care and housing for all of their cats.

Some cat registration bodies to look for in America are as follows:

Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA)

This international association is the largest registration body among pedigree cats in the whole world.

CFA was established in 1906 and since then, over 67,000 different catteries and breeders have been registered through the CFA.

The International Cat Association (TICA):

TICA is another international association with an outstanding reputation.

Their Mentoring Program pairs experienced breeders with new breeders to share knowledge and continue to grow a love of cats throughout the world.

American Cat Fanciers’ Association (ACFA)

Established in 1955, the American Cat Fanciers’ Association may not be as big as TICA or the CFA, but this organization is determined to provide excellent resources for responsible breeders.

The ACFA prioritizes flexibility and health among their registered breeders.

Maine Coon Rescue Florida

Maine Coon rescue centers are organizations that operate similarly to animal shelters but focus only on purebred or mixed Maine Coons.

There are only a few Maine Coon rescues across the United States, as not many people are willing to part with their beloved Maine Coons.

So, why would you want to adopt from a Maine Coon rescue in the first place?

Below are some good reasons for adopting a Maine Coon from a rescue center:

1. Cost

The most common reason people choose to adopt from a rescue center is due to cost.

Purchasing a registered Maine Coon from a breeder can cost anywhere from $500 to $2,000, or even more!

By comparison, adopting a Maine Coon from one of these rescue centers, however, typically costs between $150 and $400.

2. Easier Care

We all love kittens, but they are a lot more work than you might imagine.

Training a kitten, as well as providing all of the play and attention they need, can be more time-consuming than you expect.

Older cats are:

  • Calmer
  • Litterbox Trained
  • Require Less Energy To Care For Them

3. Established Personality

When you get a kitten, you have no way of knowing what its personality will be like. Adult and senior cats, though, have established personalities.

If you choose to adopt a Maine Coon through a rescue center, you will be able to choose a cat whose personality is perfectly compatible with yours.

4. Helping A Cat In Need

There are millions of cats in need of a home.

While purchasing through a responsible breeder is a great way to ensure you are getting a healthy, purebred cat, it is also great to provide a home for a cat that desperately needs love and attention.

If you do choose to adopt a cat from a rescue center, you will need to be patient; there are only a few rescue centers in America, and they often only have a few cats available at a time.

Below are two Maine Coon rescue centers to consider adopting a Maine Coon kitten or cat from:

East Coast Maine Coon Rescue

The first Maine Coon rescue center to check out is East Coast Maine Coon Rescue.

This is a nonprofit organization established in 2009, with a mission to find homes for mixed and purebred Maine Coons in need.

You can check out their site here for more information.

Maine Coon Rescue Center

Another organization, known as Maine Coon Rescue Center, is located in Woodstock, Kentucky.

Maine Coon Rescue Center not only accepts Maine Coons from all over America but also adopts these cats out into homes across the country, as well.

For more information, contact Maine Coon Rescue Center at rescue@mainecoonrescue.net, or visit their website at https://www.mainecoonrescue.net/.

How Much Does A Maine Coon Cat Cost

When searching for Maine Coons online, you will likely see a variety of prices, which can make you wonder, how much should I pay for a Maine Coon kitten?

The table below shows how the cost of a cat will vary greatly depending on a variety of factors:

FactorDescription
Kittens from registered
breeders
Expensive. Breeder may sell rare Maine
coon colors or patterns
Backyard BreedersLower cost. Potential health issues
ShelterCharge relates to animals age, not
breed
Adult and Senior
Cats
Retired breeding cats may be sold
slightly cheaper than breeder rates

Let’s take a look at these factors in a little more detail (source 1):

  • Kittens from Registered Breeders: A kitten from a registered breeder will be quite expensive, typically between $1,000 and $2,000. Cats with rare colors or patterns, such as silver, gold, smoke, or shell, can cost even more, between $3,000 and $4,000 at times!
  • Backyard Breeders: Backyard breeders will typically charge a smaller amount for their kittens, between $200 and $1,000. Of course, some irresponsible breeders will try to charge the same price as registered breeders, as well.
  • Shelter and Rescue Cats: Animal shelters charge based on an animal’s age, rather than its breed. As a result, Maine Coons at shelters will cost between $100 and $250 on average. Maine Coon rescue centers typically charge between $150 and $400.
  • Adult and Senior Cats: Some people will sell retired breeding cats or retired show cats. These cats typically cost between $1,200 and $1,600.

Where To Find Maine Coon Kittens For Free

Maine Coons are one of the most highly sought-after breeds out there, but they are not exactly cheap.

If you are searching for free Maine Coon kittens for adoption, you will have to be much more patient.

Maine Coon Mix Kittens For Sale In Florida

Most people hope to find a purebred Maine Coon, but if the price is a concern for you, you may want to consider adopting or purchasing a Maine Coon mix, instead.

A Maine Coon mix is any cat that has some amount of Maine Coon ancestry mixed with another cat breed, or mixed with a domestic shorthair or longhair (which is to say, a cat that doesn’t have a breed at all).

If you are looking for a Maine Coon mix, you will have an easier time finding one at a shelter or rescue center. You can also check online groups such as:

  • Facebook
  • Craigslist

You are less likely to source a Maine Coon mix from a registered Maine Coon breeder since they tend to only focus on preserving and enhancing existing bloodlines and do not waste valuable litters on Maine Coon mixes.

If you want to buy a Maine Coon from a breeder, you will have to find an unregistered breeder. This comes with a pretty high degree of risk, but not all unregistered breeders are bad.

Just make sure you use your judgment to find a breeder that you deem ethical, and who prioritizes the health of their cats over profit.

So, why might you want to opt for a Maine Coon mix instead?

Below are some common reasons why people opt to buy a Maine Coon mix cat:

Cost

The most obvious reason to purchase a Maine Coon mix is cost.

While purebred Maine Coons can range from $1,000 to $4,000 or even more, Maine Coon mixes rarely exceed $1,000.

Health

Maine Coons are among the healthiest purebred cats out there, whereas purebred cats are more likely to suffer from genetic conditions.

Maine Coons are susceptible to a variety of inherited conditions, including:

  • Polycystic Kidney Disease (click here to learn more)
  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy (signs and symptoms to watch for)
  • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (more info about this condition)

Maine Coon mixes, however, are less likely to inherit these conditions.

For more information, read my guide Top 7 Maine Coon Health Problems.

Easier To Find

Maine Coon mixes are pretty common in shelters, rescue centers, and online groups such as Facebook or Craigslist.

Of course, if you are purchasing a Maine Coon mix from a backyard breeder, you should use your best judgment to ensure the cat has been raised in healthy, safe conditions.

Interesting Combinations

Most Maine Coon mixes are the accidental result of a Maine Coon breeding with a regular domestic cat.

However, you can also find some interesting combinations when it comes to mixing Maine Coons with other breeds.

For example, while Maine Coons come in most colors and patterns, they do not come in colorpoint patterns, such as:

  • Siamese
  • Ragdoll
  • Himalayan

A Maine Coon mixed with a colorpoint cat, however, can look completely unique!

You Do Not Have To Sacrifice Personality

Maine Coons are famous for their gorgeous appearance and intelligent, loving personality.

While there is no way to know exactly which traits you will get in a Maine Coon mix, there is always a good chance your cat will be social and playful just like a purebred Maine Coon.

Maine Coon Kittens For Sale Craigslist Florida

Craigslist is an international site for buying and selling goods and services. Craigslist is also a popular location for selling or rehoming pets.

If you are trying to find Maine Coons on Craigslist, you will likely find a plethora of enticing ads saying things like ‘Maine Coon kittens for sale $450’ or ‘Maine Coon kittens for sale $750’).

As exciting as these offers may sound, though there are a lot of reasons why Craigslist is not a recommended route for purchasing Maine Coons.

Here are some key risks to consider when buying a Maine Coon kitten from Craigslist:

Dishonesty

You need to check if sellers on Craigslist are registered Maine Coon breeders.

Backyard breeders are motivated by profit rather than producing healthy pedigree cats.

To make more money, many people will pass off Maine Coon mixes or even long-haired cats that simply look like Maine Coons to make a quick buck.

Unless you are purchasing a Maine Coon with official documentation from a governing cat body such as TICA or CFA, there is no way to know for sure if it is a Maine Coon.

Make sure you read my article ‘How To Tell If Your Cat Is Part Maine Coon‘.

Poor Conditions

The reason Maine Coons are so expensive to purchase from reputable breeders is because they cost a lot of money to raise.

Registered breeders barely make any money from their business.

Backyard breeders that go through Craigslist may cut corners, providing their kittens and cats with:

  • Inadequate Housing Space
  • Cheap Food
  • Denying Medical Care To Pregnant Or Nursing Queens Or Sick Kittens

By purchasing a kitten from one of these breeders, not only are you more likely to end up with a sick kitten, but you are also providing money to a person who is actively harming the cats they raise.

Health

Backyard breeders who provide enough space and medical care are unlikely to prioritize the kitten’s health enough.

Kittens on Craigslist might not be dewormed or vaccinated. You will also need to check the kitten has been screened for common genetic conditions like these.

Giant Maine Coon Kittens For Sale

One of the most popular traits of Maine Coon cats is their enormous size.

These gentle giants can range from 12 to 22 pounds (according to TICA breed standards), and some record-breaking Maine Coons have even reached 35 pounds!

Take a look at these record-breaking Maine Coon cats from across the world, to see just how big some famous Maine Coon cats have grown.

Sadly, there is no way to guarantee a kitten’s size. Even breeders who claim to sell the largest cats are simply using their sales tactics on you.

While it is true that having large parents will make a kitten more likely to grow big, it is by no means a guarantee.

If you are determined to buy a giant Maine Coon, you should adopt an older cat that has already reached its full size. Maine Coon cats reach full size between 3-5 years of age.

Can Maine Coon Cats Live In Florida?

Maine Coons originated in the frigid state of Maine, whose temperatures range from 15 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year.

These cats developed long, thick coats to protect them from the cold and snow.

Florida, however, is significantly hotter than Maine, with temperatures ranging from 40 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

So, can Maine Coon cats withstand such hot temperatures?

Believe it or not, a Maine Coon’s thick fur does not just protect them against the cold; it also traps cool air and keeps them cool during the summer months.

The cats we know and love today evolved from desert-dwelling cats in northern Africa and the Middle East.

Still, hot temperatures can pose a danger to any cat.

Maine Coons should not be allowed outside when it is hot, as they can easily suffer from the following serious medical conditions:

  • Dehydration
  • Heat Exhaustion
  • Heatstroke

On warmer days, make sure your Maine Coon has constant access to shade and fresh, cool water.

Provided your Maine Coon has access to air conditioning, shade, and water when it is hot or sunny, these cats can thrive in Florida (source 1,2).

Conclusion

Searching for Maine Coon kittens for sale in Florida may seem easy at first, but there are many breeders out there who are dishonest or even raise their cats in unhealthy conditions.

If you are determined to get a purebred Maine Coon, it is best to purchase one from a breeder that has been registered with a governing cat body like TICA or CFA or to adopt one from a shelter or rescue center.
