The first huge wipeout I remember having while skiing was when I was about 10 years old at Winter Park. I don’t remember how I ended up on the ground, but I do remember the jeers and the jokes because it was right underneath the ski lift. I felt like an idiot – or an imposter on skis! That was until my brother said to me, “Don’t worry about it. If you don’t fall, you’re not trying hard enough.” These words still live with me today. Imposter Syndrome Awareness Day is this weekend, and for those who don't know what it is, it is the inner voice that says 'you're not good enough.' Everyone has Imposter Syndrome at times and that’s a great thing because it means you are challenging yourself! If you don’t ever have it, you probably aren’t trying hard enough as I learned skiing! One of our main responsibilities as org leaders is to help build our team’s confidence and self-belief, not simply their capabilities. You may be anxious at the start of anything that you do not have the answers you need, or the skills required, but I believe everyone has those feelings and everyone can create the answers and develop the skills. Everyone feels like an imposter at some point in their careers, so the key is not to eliminate all doubt but to have a strong sense of self-belief to rely on. We each need to back ourselves! Unfortunately, simply telling someone to simply believe in themselves isn’t always that helpful. Instead, I’ve found it more beneficial to encourage people to be present in the moment and “Just Play!” – do what you think at that moment is the best thing to do. Just play and you will start to feel the shift from “imposter” to 'I'm Possible.” Where do you start with people facing this doubt?

Kerry Cavanaugh, I remember a note you left on my desk in Hunt Valley telling me to channel my “inner Amy”. It really left an impression on me. For years, if I was feeling self doubt, I would think about that note. You took the time to tell me that you believed in me, which meant a lot, coming from you. Sometimes it is the right words, from someone you respect that make the difference. Thank you.

Been there. Done that. I know the feeling well. I'd just finished blasting through a small moguls run when the binding on my left ski broke while I was zipping along around 40 - 50mph. Sending that ski off on its own wild ride. I tried staying up on just the right ski. That only lasted a few seconds before I had to dodge the first post of the main ski lift. That's when the remaining ski dug in just as I'd cleared the post and sent me hurtling down the slope towards the tree line along the left of that trail... Weeee...The medical teams (were great & very surprised I was okay) were called in right away by people on the lift. I don't think anyone was giving me a hard time from up there, just out of concern of how bad it must have looked. I heard a few people asking if I was okay, and I gave them the thumbs up while I just sat there, covered in clumps of snow and laughing at the whole thing. I was having a great time that day, and was just glad I'd dodged a potentially bigger mess. Maintaining a positive attitude and perspective always helps to keep things moving forward. Things could always be worse, so just do your best not to let that be the direction you're headed. Dwelling on the negatives will just hold you back.

Well said, Kerry!A few builds: A safe space to test and learn can be super helpful. Appreciating the diversity of all team members and of oneself to enable “I can be me” helps building trust and risk taking.

At Mars, we are big fans of treating ourselves to Easter chocolate all year round… and it turns out we’re not the only ones! While there is always fun debate that Easter products are landing on store shelves far too early, our sales data and research proves that British adults are big fans of these early treats. This suggests that the way Brits are engaging with the seasonal moment of Easter has changed, which is further demonstrated by these trends: 🍫 A third of Brits buy Easter treats as soon as they land on shelves. 🍫 A quarter of UK adults would like to see Easter treats available in shops all year round. 🍫 Rather than only buying larger Easter Eggs for the long weekend, shoppers are picking up smaller Easter products much earlier! 🍫 1 in 4 Brits buy Easter products as a form of self-care, with over half reporting that a sweet treat improves their day. 🍫 Gen Z and Millennials are the demographic groups most inclined to tap into this emerging ‘little treat culture.’ Whether you have been indulging since January or are set to buy your first Easter egg this weekend, I'm proud that Mars will be the basis of so many moments of everyday happiness this weekend.PS. If you are one of our consumers set to create 17.8 million baked goods this weekend, you can find lots of tips and tricks to improve your Easter bakes on our Maltesers website…

“If you want to go far, go together.” I’m grateful to “go together” with an exceptional group of global Mars peers that have spent the last year together in one of Mars excellent GM leadership programs. Three insights that I’m grateful to now bring into my leadership…Thanks Mark Schenk for gifting us the power of storytelling. Have a point then make it with a story. Thanks Sean Kelly for the entrepreneurial insight that if a decision is reversable, there’s really little risk. Understand what’s reversable so you can move more aggressively with your bold ideas and innovation. How are we unlocking opportunities for women here at Mars?As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s great to see that our commitment to fostering an environment for equal opportunities has never been stronger.Through the ‘Full Potential’ Platform to Advance Gender Equity, we aim to achieve gender balance at Mars across 100% of our leadership teams. But we’re not done yet. Improving the range of family support benefits and advancing our flexible hybrid working practices are just a few of the things we are doing to be more inclusive and achieve gender equity.I’m proud of all the work the incredible women at Mars are doing to address the barriers they have faced and how Mars is taking action to improve the workplace for current and future generations of women. I'm grateful for the incredible leaders I work closely with everyday on our UK business like Katie Walland, Alison Bryony Owen, Esther Straub, Tamsin Jones, Kay W., Katy Finlayson, Megan Foley and Naomi Jones (Chartered MCIPR)! Thank you!

Mars consistently wins plaudits for being one of the best places to work. I recently celebrated my 10th anniversary here and I know it deserves to top every single list.I have worked with exceptional Associates on our confectionery and snack bar units, and the past six years leading our UK marketing team has been a career and personal highlight.Over my 10 years, three things especially stand out that I'm grateful to have learned:📈Coaching & Development: Make this your first priority as a leader.Too many amazing talents are struggling with Imposter Syndrome, spend your energy building their energy and their self-belief.💡Perspective: Great ideas are everywhere. Be curious and seek out diverse perspectives globally because every problem has inspiring solutions waiting to be discovered.🤝Purpose: First I learned about Economics of Mutuality, then we began to pivot our iconic brands like Maltesers and Galaxy into new purpose-led campaigns. All because "profit without purpose isn't meaningful, and purpose without profit isn't possible."Thanks to my Founders, Rockstars and Good Rebels teams for teaching me so much and embracing being the only ones who do what you do. Thanks to my UKLT peers for creating high standards and high care working together everyday. Special thanks to Roy Benin and Seth Klugherz for bringing me into Mars, and to the many who have taken time to coach me over the years, including Adam Grant, Michelle Frost, Hank Izzo, Matthew Lloyd, Tracey Massey, Berta de Pablos-Barbier, Blas Maquivar, Andrew Clarke, Marc Carena and Rankin Carroll. Here’s to the next 10 years of Tomorrow Starts Today!

Last week was what you imagine it is like to work at Mars Wrigley. It was Christmas in February! Our One Demand team had the 2024 UK Holiday Season sell in Slough by performing a pantomime that inspired our sales team. It was surreal stepping into an office filled with Christmas trees, mince pies and Mars chocolates! After 6 years in the UK, I find the 🇬🇧 pantomime tradition “interesting” but I would not miss another Mars Wrigley pantomime. Huge well done and a big “Oh yes you did!” To Jenny Watson , Nicola Thomas, Catherine Lawrence, Michael James Crossley, Sarah King, Scott Baird-Green and many more on our amazing S&G team! And who could forget the remarkable cameo from our very own Robin Hood — Matt Boulter!
