Junior Julie McCarron (Wilmington, DE) hit a driving layup with 0.9 seconds left in helping Goldey-Beacom to its fourth consecutive victory, 55-53 over Chestnut Hill in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division matchup in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom in the opening half again showed its strong defensive mentality, holding Chestnut Hill to just 27 percent shooting (9-of-33) and forced eight turnovers. Senior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE), the reigning CACC Player of the Week, continued her solid play in the post with eight points on 3-of-6 shooting with five rebounds.

The Lightning exploded out of the gate in the second half looking for a huge road win. GBC went on a 15-7 run to own a 36-29 lead with 1:28 left in the third quarter, keyed by two 3-pointers from McCarron and four points from Stevens.

The Griffins rallied for a 39-39 tie early in the fourth before the Lightning again hit the gas pedal, using a 12-7 burst in four minutes for a 51-46 lead with 3:36 left. Steven netted four points in that time and freshman Farrah White (Wilmington, DE) ended it with two free throws.

Both teams executed great defense for the next minute before Chestnut Hill's Bridie McCann was just heating up, canning a 3-pointer with 2:46 remaining for a 51-49 contest.

The defenses again were on point as only two field goals would be made the rest of the way.

Avery White was fouled for Chestnut Hill with one minute to go and hit once for a 51-50 GBC lead. After a GBC turnover, McCann missed a jumper that would have given her side the lead and junior Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, NJ) hauled in the rebound.

Stevens was fouled with 23 seconds to go and canned two free throws for a 53-50 Lightning advantage.

It was strategy time for Chestnut Hill, which went to its hot hand. McCann had a great look from the right wing and buried a 3-pointer with 19 seconds to go for a 53-53 tie.

GBC called timeout with seven seconds left looking for the lead and it was McCarron who was called upon. She took the inbounds pass, showed patience and saw her driving layup dance on the rim before falling through.

The Griffins had their chance to tie and it was Lindsey Lane who had an open look in the paint, but her shot at the buzzer went awry.

Stevens had 18 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and shot 8-for-8 from the foul line. McCarron netted 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting with White adding 11.

McCann scored 20 points with Emily Sekerak adding 10 for the Griffins (16-8, 10-4 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (6-20, 5-9) now owns a 1 1/2-game lead over idle Georgian Court (3-10) for the fourth and final CACC Tournament spot out of the South Division.

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday visits Jefferson for a 6:00 pm contest, which precedes the men's game between the same schools at 8:00 pm.
