TOGETHER, THEY WON THE NATIONAL TITLE IN THEIR DIVISION AT THE UNIVERSAL CHEERLEADERS ASSOCIATION COMPETITION IN FLORIDA. 12 NEWS. MALLORY ANDERSON WAS THERE FOR THIS MORNING’S MARCH OF CHAMPIONS. IN A RARE ROLE REVERSAL WEDNESDAY, THE GREENDALE CHEER TEAM AND PEP BAND WERE ON THE RECEIVING END OF CHEERS. THE CELEBRATION COMMEMORATING THIS MOMENT IN FLORIDA AT THE UNIVERSAL CHEERLEADERS ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIPS. NATIONAL CHAMPION AND GREENDALE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION. I WAS LITERALLY LIKE, IN DISBELIEF, LIKE, I EVEN NOW, I’M STILL LIKE, DID I REALLY JUST WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP? THE CHEER TEAM, WORKING FOR MONTHS ALONGSIDE THE PEP BAND FOR THE RARE ACHIEVEMENT, WHILE RECORDED MUSIC USUALLY PLAYS FOR THEIR ROUTINES IN THIS DIVISION, THE BAND PLAYED LIVE, HITTING THE BEAT FOR EVERY STUNT. IT’S REALLY CRAZY TO THINK THAT I NEVER THOUGHT DOING BAND WOULD GET ME A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH THE CHEER TEAM, BUT HERE WE ARE. WHILE THE CHEER TEAM IS CLEARLY VERY DECORATED ALREADY, THEY ARE EXCITED TO MAKE ROOM FOR THEIR BIGGEST TROPHY YET. THE SCHOOL’S FIRST NATIONAL TITLE. GREENDALE HAS NEVER HAD A TEAM WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE. IN WISCONSIN’S ONLY HAD ONE OTHER TEAM WIN CHEER NATIONALS BEFORE AND THIS YEAR WE WON AND MENOMONEE FALLS WON. SO WE BROUGHT HOME TWO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS TO WISCONSIN, WHICH IS JUST LIKE INSANE TO THINK ABOUT. The Greendale High School cheer team and pep band were welcomed home with a huge celebration Wednesday after the groups won the school's first-ever national title in Florida.The cheer team and pep band were named national champions in the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) National High School Cheerleading Championships. Nearly 70 Greendale students competed in Orlando, Florida, under the 2024 "Game Day LIVE!" category."It was the most unreal thing I've ever experienced," said Grace Uremovich, Greendale senior and varsity cheer captain. "Going into it, I had no idea we were going to win first. It could go either way. Hearing the other team get announced as second, I was literally in disbelief. Even now, I'm still like, did I really just win a national championship?"Students and staff lined the hallways of the high school Wednesday morning, cheering on the group during a "March of Champions.""I felt pride in being able to bring home this national championship to our school and seeing everybody wave, smile, pat us on the back, and congratulate us... That was really cool, being able to experience that," said Ayanna LaPointe, Greendale senior and varsity cheer captain. The cheer team worked for months alongside the pep band for the rare achievement. While recorded music usually plays for their competition routines, in the "Game Day LIVE!" division, the band played live, hitting the beat for every stunt."I think when you take two of our most successful teams in the school and combine them, there's only one recipe for success," said Ben Wimmer, Greendale senior and pep band snare. "I think we've kind of pulled that off really well. It's really crazy to think that I never thought doing band would get me a national championship with a cheer team, but here we are."Together the groups brought home Greendale's very first national title in any sport. "Greendale's never had a team win a national championship before, and Wisconsin's only had one other team win cheer nationals before," Uremovich said. "This year, we won, and Menomonee Falls won. So we brought home two national championships to Wisconsin, which is just insane to think about. I feel really proud of our team, that we're the first one that got to bring home something this big to Greendale."It's also been a crazy few months for the Greendale band. They began rehearsing for the national championship just days after returning from New York City, where they performed in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. "Where does this rank when it comes to your favorite things that have happened in your high school career?" asked WISN 12 News' Mallory Anderson."I think this might be at the top of the list, just because I can say that I've won state titles, I can say that we've gone to the Macy's Parade, but now that I can say I'm a national champion... it's kind of sweet," Wimmer said.
