FAQs

How to make pizza over a campfire? ›

We recommend using a cast iron skillet or pan, but you can cook pizza directly on a fire ring grate if one is available. Many cooks recommend briefly cooking both sides of the dough before you put on the toppings. Oil the pan, pop in the dough and place the pan on the grate about eight inches above the hot coals.

Can you use a pizza stone on a fire pit? ›

Grilled pizzas are great on a camp fire on a hot stone. You can only achieve the thin crusted style with minimal toppings but this is something the whole family can be involved with – be careful as too much liquid means a soggy crust and they also cook very fast once the stone is hot!

Can you cook a pizza on a camping stove? ›

Place one of the dough halves in the skillet, and using your fingers, press and push the dough towards the edges of the skillet. Drizzle 1/2 tablespoon oil along the edge of the skillet. Place the skillet on a grate over your campfire, or on your camp stove at fairly high heat.

How do you make wood fire pizza at home? ›

There's no wood to burn in your oven, so to get as close to woodfired pizza as possible, your oven needs to be super-hot. Preheat a pizza stone in the oven for 30 minutes to an hour before you start baking, at 500°F or 550°F. To help it get as hot as possible, place it on a rack in the top third of the oven.

How long does it take to cook pizza in a wood fire? ›

Please take care of the high temperatures. Using a pizza peel, place your pizza on the oven floor, right next to the fire, making sure you rotate it regularly to encourage even cooking. It should only take between 90 seconds to 2 minutes per pizza depending on thickness. Always leave the door open when baking pizza.

What is the best fire for pizza? ›

Hardwood is the best choice to use for your wood fire pizza oven. Only dense, dry hardwood can provide that kind of heat that you will need to cook the perfect pizza. Hardwood is heavier and burns longer compared to softwood. There are many choices for hardwood but use the one that is available in your area.

What not to do with a pizza stone? ›

Pizza stones are susceptible to what's called "thermal shock," wherein rapid temperature changes (like going straight from a hot oven to a cold countertop) can cause it to crack. (Indeed, cooking a frozen pizza on a pizza stone is another no-no.) Likewise, adding a cold stone to a hot oven can also cause it to crack.

What stones should not be used in a fire pit? ›

While attractive for other landscaping uses, basalt is generally not a rock you want in your fire pit. The main reason is because of the possibility of explosion with exposure to high heat due to the water that often accumulates inside.

Can you burn any wood in a pizza oven? ›

In general terms, you can opt for softwood or hardwood. Softwood has a quick start-up burn, ignites quickly but also burns quickly. Hardwood has a slower ignition but burns for longer, they also produce more heat per unit, so are more fuel efficient than softwood. Hardwood is also denser so has a lot more to burn.

Can you cook meat in a wood fired pizza oven? ›

There are a number of ways you can cook steak in the pizza oven depending on the type of equipment and accessories you have on hand. Entertaining someone special? These tips and flavor techniques will ensure your wood fired rib eye steak is an absolute show stopper!

How do you build an outdoor pizza oven fire? ›

Build your fire in the center (left to right and front to back) of the pizza oven using 7-9 sticks of dry kindling, one to two odor-free, non-toxic fire starters, and two to three pieces of seasoned medium or hardwood. Alternatively, you can light your fire with a butane torch.

How do you make a wood fired pizza crispy? ›

A perfectly crispy pizza is achieved by baking in a high heat oven. The dough needs to be baked longer making the toppings dry in a low temperature oven. Keep an eye on the fire making sure it is even to avoid burning the pie. A pizza flour should contain no more than 14 percent protein content.

How to make wood fired pizza on the grill? ›

Simply stack a chimney starter worth of lit, lightly ashed-over coals on one side of the grill and stack two logs on top. Within a couple of minutes, fire will engulf the logs and you'll have enough heat to make several pies.
