(AP) — The hotel featured in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film “The Shining” says it will reopen to guests Sunday after a fire that prompted evacuations but caused only minimal damage. The historic Timberline Lodge in Oregon says Saturday via Facebook that the damage is “benign” and contained to certain areas. It says embers from the large stone fireplace apparently ignited the roof Thursday night. No injuries were reported. Hotel workers will help guests navigate repairs, and historic preservation efforts are also underway. The lodge was constructed in 1937. It is located 60 miles east of Portland, on the slopes of Mount Hood.

He faces a May 3 court date after being charged with three felony counts of reckless endangerment and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct. Gabriel starred at North Carolina State and was the No. 2 pick by the Rams in the 1962 draft. The Oakland Raider of the rival AFL made him the No. 1 pick. Gabriel signed with the Rams and later played with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Third temporary channel opens for vessels to Baltimore port after bridge collapse

BALTIMORE (AP) — A third temporary channel for boats to access the Port of Baltimore has opened as workers keep removing debris from the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed after it was struck by a cargo ship. Port officials on Friday announced access to an alternate channel to the northeast of the fallen bridge. The port captain says with the new channel open, 15% of pre-collapse commercial activity should be restored. An effort to restore broader access to the port continues. Opening a channel to allow most maritime traffic back in is still on track for the end of the month. Six people died in the March 26 collapse.

David Pryor, former governor and senator of Arkansas, dies at age 89

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — David Pryor, a former Arkansas governor and U.S. senator who was one of the state’s most beloved and active political figures, has died at the age of 89. His son, former two-term Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor, says the Democrat died Saturday of natural causes in Little Rock surrounded by family. David Pryor was considered one of the Democratic party’s giants in Arkansas and remained active in public life after he left office, including serving on the University of Arkansas’s Board of Trustees.

Federal officials investigating co*ckpit visit by Rockies coach during United flight

DENVER (AP) — Federal officials are investigating an unauthorized inflight co*ckpit visit by a coach for the Colorado Rockies during a United Airlines charter flight. Video surfaced that appears to show Rockies hitting coach Hensley Meulens sitting in a pilot’s seat while the April 10 flight from Denver to Toronto was at cruising altitude. The airline said Friday that the visit was “a clear violation of our safety and operational polices” and was reported to the Federal Aviation Administration. The agency has increased oversight of United amid recent mishaps that included an engine fire and a tire falling off a plane.

More than 2,100 people are evacuated as an Indonesian volcano spews clouds of ash

MANADO, Indonesia (AP) — More than 2,100 people living near an erupting volcano on Indonesia's Sulawesi Island are being evacuated. The authorities ordered them to leave due to the dangers of spreading ash, falling rocks, hot volcanic clouds and the possibility of a tsunami. Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation recorded at least three eruptions since Friday afternoon, with the maximum height of the eruption column reaching 3,900 feet. An international airport in Manado city is still temporarily closed as volcanic ash was spewed into the air. Satellite imagery from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency shows that ash has spread in multiple directions, covering Manado and North Minahasa.
